How to operate a mini excavator: training tips for novice operators

When mini excavators were just introduced, they were considered as toys by those heavy equipment operators. But now, they have been widely used in construction sites with their distinguished performance in tight working areas, ease of operation, low cost and precise operation. For landscaping, small ditches for irrigation, and utility project, the compact machines can make work very easy. Here are the basics to operate a mini digger.

1.Find a level and clear area to try the machine. Mini excavators are stable and have superior features, but they still can be overturned. So it’s important to start out on level and firm ground.

2.Check if there is any loose or damaged parts, for instance oil leaks, other fluids dripping, lose control cables and linkages, damaged tracks, or other potential problems. These are standard procedures for operating any vehicles and construction machines, helping you to avoid hazardous operation.

3.Sit in the cab and moves the joysticks around a bit. The joysticks control the bucket/boom assembly and the rotation function that swings the upper part of the mini excavators.

4.The drive/steer controls rotate the track on the side it’s located on. When you push both sticks forward, the machine will move forward. But when you push an individual rod forward, it’s the same with pushing a stick backward, which will move the mini excavator backward. And the counter rotating will spin the machine in one place. The farther you move the controls, the faster the move will move. So it’s important to push or pull these sticks slowly and smoothly when you start operation.

5.If you want to accelerate the machine, step on the small pedal on the left of the floor board, which is the high speed control and boosts the drive pump. The pedal on the right side is used to pivot the mini excavator’s hoe left and right. Keep in mind that these two controls can only be used on stable and level terrain, otherwise it may case the tipping over of the machine.

Different types of container lifting equipment you need

Container lifting equipment exists in many types including reach stacker, forklift truck, empty container handler, ship-to-shore container crane, rail mounted gantry crane, rubber tyre gantry crane, and portal slewing crane, meeting your unique need in terminal management.

The primary task of a container terminal is to manage vessel berthing, inbound container unloading, outbound container loading and storage yards efficiently and securely. Such a goal can be achieved when you place the right container lifting equipment in the right place.

Ship-to-shore container crane is a large dockside gantry crane found at container terminals for loading and unloading of intermodal containers from berths to container ships and from berths to ships. The operator runs the trolley along rails from the landside to the waterside, lifting the container with spreader from ship, moving it over the dock and then placing on a trailer to be taken to the storage yard.

Portal slewing crane is a high profile dockside gantry crane that performs functions similar to the STS crane, with the boom hinged at the waterside of the crane structure and lifted in the air to clear the containers and ships for navigation.

Rail mounted gantry crane is specially designed for intensive container lifting and stacking due to its strong lifting capacity, being widely used in container storage yard. RMG cranes lift the massive loads beneath the gantry structure, supported by a complex system of cables and gantry frame.

Rubber tyre gantry crane is mobile gantry crane used for container lifting and stacking in container terminals and container storage yards. Compared to other large port cranes, RTG crane has a wide application thanks to its mobility.

In addition, forklift trucks, reach stackers and container handlers are also very useful in container terminals for optimizing container storage. Forklift trucks mostly counterbalance forklifts are vehicles fitted with wide mast and forks that can be mounted into the slots of containers in order to lift, move and stack the containers.

Reach stacker consists of a steering mechanism, an arm attached with spreader, and counterweight mounted behind the cab. It is able to lift the empty or loaded container with spreader, transport it quickly from one place to another, and pile them up and in various rows. 

There are empty container handlers and handlers to lift both empty and loaded containers. Maximum lift tower extension and counterweight enable the container handler to stack empty or full containers seven or eight layers high without risk of tipping over.
